At Avante we’re always on the lookout for new and exciting apps that represent strong examples of effective mobile application design. We believe that in order to design highest quality mobile apps we need to constantly have our eyes open to apps coming out of other design houses that show great promise and potential. We especially enjoy seeing other development studios delivering apps that scratch a particular itch that we’ve been experiencing or that fill voids that we’ve identified in the app ecosystem. And we’ve found one such app: it’s called Strong. Strong is an workout tracking ap... read more

  • AR Apps May Be Just The Thing Your Organization Needs

Science fiction is now widely deployed fact as augmented reality (AR), seeps into our mobile device and computing worlds and are used for design, marketing, research, and leisure among other uses. We mentioned augmented reality in previous posts, but to reiterate for clarity, augmented reality, not to be confused with virtual reality, is when the virtual world is layered onto the real world using a mobile device, like a phone, tablet or even a specialized headset as a medium to experience images, video, and information. Think of your device as a portal to see holograms transposed onto you... read more

  • Augmented Reality, AR-Kit, and iOS11

Augmented reality is stuff we have seen before, in science fiction, along with a select few in the military who were cleared for prototype devices that use it. If you have seen the film, The Terminator (James Cameron, 1984), about a robot from the future sent back in time (our present) to assassinate key fighters in the resistance of what will become a war between man and machine. You may recall the moment in the film when the point of view is from the robot’s perspective as it perceives its surroundings and the visuals are supplemented (or augmented) by readouts of data of the surroundin... read more

  • The Kotlin Programming Language for Android

A new mobile app development language for Android is afoot, Kotlin. Kotlin is the brainchild of JetBrains, a software development team who make tools for app development and now computer languages too. Kotlin is considered a successor to Java, the current mainstream development language for Android. Java is mired with some key issues. For instance, Java is controlled by Oracle, who recently took Google to court over the latter’s massive success with the Android platform, which is built on Java. The gist of the lawsuit was, if Google is doing so well with Android on the back of Java, why ... read more

  • Your Mobile App Needs Marketshare? Think American.

If your business or organization is looking to develop and deploy mobile apps, and if part of your goal of said apps is marketshare, look to the Americans. America comprises a vast and powerful market and even small adoption by them still translates to big numbers when measured up against our modest population. It may not always be easy to break into the American app market, perhaps due to regulatory restrictions such as if your app deals with softwood lumber or if your products are only available in Canada and forbidden in the USA, such as selling Kinder chocolate eggs. • Avante Presents econoNet

We, at Avante, have noticed a gap in the web hosting market. At some point in time, all of our engineers were customers of web hosting providers and we have all noticed the same issues when looking for service. Hosting servers tend to be oversold, page loading tends to be slow, companies overcharge for an email address at a domain name of choice, not to mention being gouged for getting an SSL certificate if you plan to launch an e-commerce, which is essential. During one of our weekly meetings, someone brought up hosting providers and half the meeting time went straight to a ‘critique ses... read more

  • Five ways Apple’s shift from 32 to 64 bit CPU architecture affects you.

Apple now manufacturers their devices with 64 bit CPU’s instead of 32 bit and with it, the entire iOS mobile app ecosystem. The central processing unit (CPU) is the engine that fullfills the myriad of requests from mobile apps installed by the user. Here are five ways this change impacts customers. Future Proofing. When a mobile app is run on your iOS device, it takes up random access memory (RAM) and the most RAM a device with 32 bit architecture can use is up to four gigs. If your business is considering a mobile app for development, or thinking about it, it may be a good idea to look at the mobile marketplace landscape in Canada as a whole and probably the rest of the Americas as well. We at Avante consult several market databases and research reports such as those by MarketLine and EuroInternational. These reports are large and cover many facets of the mobile industry including fabrication/manufacturing, carriers, retailers, and consumers which is why posts will be broken down into a series, to cover each facet. For this post, we will examine revenue of the Canadian mobile phone market, which in 2015 had a total market revenue of 5.5 billion in sales, up 7.7% from the previous year for a value of 5,504 million. The compound annual growth rate of mobile phones since 2011 is 13.4%. Of these sales, roughly 10% of sales are for ‘feature phones’, which are phones with limited web browsing abilities with modest processors that run a narrow set of applications and functions. At one time, feature phones were the bulk of mobile phone sales but these numbers are shrinking. 90% of sales comprise the ‘smart phone’ category which are essentially mini-handheld computers with powerful processors, full web browsing capacity and run an assortment of sophisticated computer-grade applications. The feature phone market is likely to continue to shrink as smart phone sales assert dominance. Projected revenue growth of the Canadian mobile phone market by 2020 is expected to reach 14.4% growth per annum with a growing North American marketshare of 2.7 %. To give an indication of the significance of this figure, Canada’s mobile phone market currently holds 6.7% of the North American market share.
